Pre-Paleo Preparation (Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How)

Goodbye 2014, and Hello 2015!

WHO

My name is Abby! I'm a college sophomore at BYU. I lived in Oregon all my life, and now I live in Provo, UT! I'm a pretty typical BYU student. I'm Mormon, I study anthropology and sociology, work at the BYU Law Library, live in an off-campus apartment with five awesome girls, and have a boyfriend(who's name is Joe and he is also very awesome). Because of all of the above, I am very busy, and have to cater to a lot of different environments and social situations when it comes to what and how I eat.

WHAT
What is Paleo? I've been trying to figure that out for a while now. There's the Whole30 program, the Paleo website, and a plethora of other diets that vary and overlap and can become very confusing to a college student that just wants to eat healthier. But after some study, I found out that there are some basic guidelines to eating Paleo.

-NO grains(Like, N-O-N-E. Also know potatoes or corn or starches). There goes literally half of my pantry.
-NO dairy
-NO legumes(including peanuts, more on that later)
-Refines sugar and oil
-Processed foods
-Alcohol

Looking at this list, my first thoughts were 1. No alcohol? No problem. I'm Mormon and already abstain from it. 2. WHAT AM I GOING TO EAT?!

Here's that list:

-Grass fed meat
-Vegetables
-Fruits
-Eggs
-Fish
-Nuts
-Unrefined oils
-Honey
-Maple Syrup

Looking at this list my first thoughts were 1. How do I make a meal out of it? 2. What do I already eat that is paleo?

WHEN

Starting January 4th, 2014! I will be documenting and writing everyday for the Whole30 Program, and will evaluate and modify if needed and hopefully continue if I want!

WHERE

Provo, UT! A relatively small college town, with a huge young adult population. It also has 6 or 7 grocery stores just off the top of my head. I hope to visit and evaluate all of them as to find the best source for cheap Paleo groceries on a budget.

Also, as I previously mentioned, I am dating someone, and he is a guy that loves to go out to eat. Because of this, it will also be a goal of mine to find local restaurants that have Paleo options!

HOW

Pinterest has been my go-to cookbook. I type in "paleo" and VOILA! Recipes galore at my fingertips.

Yummly is an iPhone app I have found that comes up with Paleo recipes right on my phone! It's really aesthetic and fun to use, although lacks some variety.

Some websites such as Stupid Easy Paleo and Nom Nom Paleo have also helped a lot to find meal ideas.

I have found that I already have a lot of paleo ingredients and recipes that can be turned Paleo, a lot of which I will share on this blog! Be expecting recipes and meal plans in the near future! But for now, here are some things I already have that I can keep!

-Chicken breast
-Tomatos
-Bell Pepper
-Bananas
-Organic Pesto
-Eggs
-Canned Tuna
-Almond Butter
-Olives
-Dill Pickles
-SPICES SPICES SPICES

So that's that!
